Anime I'm Looking At...

...I'm wanting to watch this, but I'm waiting a bit for the holidays to end, so I can afford to get some.
  • Fate/stay night- It looks curiously interesting. Must write more harem anime, I can see a potential plot line here...
  • Zipang-Alternate history fun, with a definite Japanese "feel" to it. It has to be better than Weapons Of Choice(Hilary Clinton as the "best wartime president ever"?!?!?)...
  • GUNxSWORD-Interesting sort of Cowboy Bebop/Trigun cross, with mecha. Maybe get from Greencine first.
  • Solty Rei-This looks like it'll be fun. Strange, but fun.
I'd love to see a good sci-fi anime series, a'la Banner of the Stars/Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and a good mecha series (Gundam SEED Destiny is NOT cutting it). And, a series that doesn't end in a car crash like the latest Tenchi Muyo would be nice, too.

For the five episodes that I watched, Solty Rei didn't seem all that strange, at least for anime. It's really typical of Gonzo's recent work... a bit of action, a bit of comedy, a bit of fanservice. The protagonist's character design is really weird, though.

IMHO the best mecha anime currently being released in R1 is Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid. Of course, your enjoyment of it is heavily dependent on your opinion of the FMP franchise.

FMP!TSR is tempting, and I'm probably going to get it, too. I enjoyed the fansub, and I'll get the prosub, too.

Isn't one of Gonzo's defining terms weird character designs?

Solty Rei looked more like an AIC anime, only uglier and brain-wrenchingly stupid.

And re: Weapons of Choice, Clinton wasn't "the best wartime president", she was "the most unyielding", which since she apparently was killed in some sort of Islamist nuclear terrorist strike prior to the building of the Hillary Clinton, hadn't been all that good of a thing. Her unyieldingness seems to have gotten her a rather spectacular assassination, at least by American standards. I see that her eventual successor Natalie Lileks did better...

(Bugger, looks like the original post got eaten by the linkrot monster. We had all looked forward to just how boggled Gnat would be when she grew up and found surrealist nonsense like that sitting around, like Carroll's original Alice reading his books...)

Hmmm... I'm not that familiar with Gonzo's original works (as opposed to adaptations), so I can't really say. Character designs are influenced by the designer rather than the studio, and picking five Gonzo shows at random from their site yielded five different character designers. Guess what I was trying to say was that I didn't like Solty's character design much. I mean, are they ears or hair?

As for TSR, Funimation and ADV have done an awesome job with the DVD release based on volume one. Even if I didn't give a fig about supporting the creators or whatever I'd still consider it for the crap-load of extras that would be hard to find on file-sharing sites.

The extras are what often sells me on the prosubs I get. :) The more, the better.
